Ohio Department of Education Background Check Requirements: What Every Educator Should Know

Why Ohio Requires Background Checks
ODE requires background checks to ensure that every educator entering a school environment meets strict safety and ethical standards. These checks verify state and federal criminal history, fingerprint-based identity confirmation, eligibility to work with children, and compliance with Ohio law for licensure and renewal.
Required Background Checks for Ohio Educators
Ohio law requires both of the following for first-time applicants: BCI (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation) background check and FBI national background check. Both must be no older than 365 days when ODE issues the initial credential.
Renewal Requirements
Educators must complete updated checks throughout their careers: FBI check every 5 years and BCI check every 5 years if the educator lived outside Ohio during that period or if their credential expired. ODE only accepts electronic submissions through WebCheck.
